Understanding Somatics

What is somatics? Soma- means body somatic’s means relating to the body.

So what we are talking about here is through a somatic lens; all in relation to the body. Our body, is our gateway to experience life.

Many people view the brain as being separate from the body. This is not the case, and brain tissue and nervous tissue are what create our conscious experience of life as well as many “mental” conclusions we may draw from.

Fascia— the connective tissue that covers all of our bones, organs, and muscles actually is the most responsible aspect of the the body for forming memory, and proprioceptive awareness. It delivers to the brain essential information about pressure and movement, signaling to our awareness where we are in space. Fascia has over 250 million nerve endings, and is considered the largest sensory organ. Fascia is deeply intertwined with our autonomic nervous system, influencing digestion, circulation, and the way we manage stress.

When you experience physical or emotional stress. The fascia contains sensory receptors that tell it to tighten or harden against the circumstances.

Because the fascia then responds to the emotional environment, physical aliments can be a direct manifestation of the emotional tension we are holding. Strain patterns can occur as well as chronic pain. Think— stiff neck and shoulders. This can also happen through postural habits, however negetive postural habits rarely happen when we are actually embodying our body. They happen when we are vacant, we go into a mild fight or flight or dissociative state over and over slumped over our computer.

We all have circumstances that will inevitably stress us out. That is just life, the point isn’t to never have stress. The point is with our modern world and all it’s demands, you have to intentionally create habits and space to dispel that stress in order for the body to maintain health and equilibrium.
